HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hornets to face Lawrence County in scrimmage
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will host Lawrence County in a preseason high school football scrimmage on Thursday, August 11.
The Hornets, following a break over the weekend, resumed preseason practice on Monday.
“Preseason practice is going well,” Magoffin County Coach Scotty McCoy said on Tuesday. “The kids are working hard. I have about 24 players out right now.”
Lawrence County is under the direction of first-year head coach Alan Short. A former standout player for the Bulldogs, Short replaced longtime head coach Joey Cecil at the helm of the Lawrence County football program earlier in the year.
The Bulldogs concluded the 2015 season 9-4. Lawrence County fell to Class 3A, District 6 rival and eventual state champion Belfry in the Class 3A, Region 3 championship game. Prior to the postseason, Lawrence County had finished runner-up to Belfry in Class 3A, District 6. Perennial Kentucky high school football powerhouse Belfry has captured three consecutive Class 3A state championships.
The Magoffin County-Lawrence County scrimmage is scheduled to start around 7 p.m.
Magoffin County hosted Paintsville for a passing game on Tuesday. Paintsville reached the Class A State Semifinals in 2015.
The Hornets opened preseason practice officially on July 11, returning to the field shortly after the conclusion of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s mandatory dead period.
Magoffin County is slated to kick off the 2016 season at home versus non-district opponent Leslie County on Aug. 19.
