HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Combs named Magoffin County head coach

17

SALYERSVILLE - After resigning from his post at Clay County earlier in the month, Breathitt County native Justin Combs has been named the new Magoffin County football head coach. He replaces former coach Scotty McCoy.

Combs is no stranger to the Magoffin County football program. He served as an assistant coach with the Hornets in 2014. In 2015, his first season as a head coach in Manchester, Combs guided Clay County to a 2-9 record and a berth in the Class 4A State Playoffs.

Combs played at Breathitt County under head coach Mike Holcomb from 2001-2004. He was a member of Breathitt County’s 2002 Class 2A state championship team.

Less than two seasons removed from guiding Magoffin County to its first district championship and appearance in the playoffs, McCoy left the Hornet football program program. He vacated the Magoffin County football post after his wife secured a teaching job in Lawrence County.

McCoy coached the Hornets to a district title in 2014. The Hornets compiled a 7-5 record in 2014, defeating Sheldon Clark in the opening round of the Class 3A State Playoffs before suffering a season-ending loss to Lawrence County.

Prior to being named head coach of the Hornets, McCoy was an assistant coach on the Magoffin County coaching staff, working with under the direction of his father, former head coach Chester McCoy.

The Hornets concluded the 2015 season 2-8, missing out on reaching the Class 3A State Playoffs.

Combs is excited about the new coaching opportunity he has in Magoffin County.

“It feels great to be back at Magoffin County,” Combs said over the weekend. “It gets me closer to family. I coached most of these young men when I was an assistant under Coach (Scotty) McCoy so it wasn’t too much of an adjustment for me or the players. I hope to build this program and return some more district titles to Magoffin County. We have a great group of kids here at Magoffin County and I am grateful to get to come back and coach them. These kids play hard and will do everything you ask of them. Their effort is great and I can’t wait to start a full week with them.”
