GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets to meet host Leslie County in Coach Wilson Classic
HYDEN - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets will face a tough early-season test when they face defending 14th Region champion Leslie County on the road in the Coach Wilson Classic on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Leslie County defeated Jenkins 76-59 in March to win the 14th Region girls’ basketball championship.
Wendell Wilson coached the Leslie County girls’ basketball team for 31 years, recording 564 wins. He is seventh on the state’s girls’ basketball all-time coaching wins list.
Wilson guided the Lady Eagles to 12 district championships (1976-1982, 1985-1986, 1989, 1991 and 2000) and three 14th Region titles (1979, 1981 and 1986) during his coaching career.
The Leslie County girls’ basketball and boys’ basketball programs will co-host the annual Coach Wilson Classic. Magoffin County is scheduled to meet host Leslie County in a girls’ basketball matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.
The Lady Hornets are under the direction of first-year head coach Doug Greene. Magoffin County finished runner-up to Shelby Valley in the 15th Region last season.
Prior to visiting Leslie County for the Coach Wilson Classic, Magoffin County will host South Floyd in its season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Lady Hornets are slated to visit Sheldon Clark for another early-season game on Dec. 2.
Magoffin County’s regular season schedule will include additional games versus Shelby Valley, Betsy Layne, Belfry, Paintsville, Hazard, Sheldon Clark, East Ridge, Knott County Central, Allen Central, Johnson Central, Pike County Central, Pikeville, Robertson County, Morgan County, Belfry and Menifee County.
The Lady Hornets compete in the 57th District, along with Johnson Central, Paintsville and Sheldon Clark.
