GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets drop season opener to South Floyd

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets dropped their 2016-17 season opener under new head coach Doug Greene. Visiting South Floyd, a much-improved squad, pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 68-39 in the new Magoffin County High School Gym on Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders shook a slow start to pull away to win convincingly. 

South Floyd, under the direction of head coach Justin Triplett, managed to produce offensively and turned in a solid season-opening performance. 

Katie More paced South Floyd with a double-double, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. 

Delivering a double-double of her own, Cheyann Light contributed 11 points and 10 assists for the Lady Raiders. 

Brook Stumbo and Jessie Tackett accompanied Moore and Light in double figures, tossing in 11 points of her own. 

South Floyd recorded 21 assists opposed to only nine turnovers. 

Narrowly missing double figures, Kennedy Blevins netted nine points for the Lady Raiders. 

Kaylee Moore and Taylor Berger rounded out the South Floyd scoring, tallying four points and three points respectively. 

Berger helped to lead the Lady Raiders around the goal, grabbing 10 rebounds. 

Alexis Montgomery led Magoffin County with a team-best 11 points. Montgomery was the only Lady Hornet to reach double figures in the scoring column. 

Narrowly missing double figures, Kennedi Stacy and Shanna Howard netted nine points apiece for the Lady Hornets. 

Other scorers for Magoffin County in the loss were Presley Russell (five points), Kenlee Wireman (two points), Destiny Conley (two points) and Haley Barnett (one point). 

The Lady Hornets are slated to visit Sheldon Clark for a 57th District game on Friday night. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Sheldon Clark girls’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Magoffin County is scheduled to venture to Hyden to face host Leslie County in the Coach Wendell Wilson Classic on Saturday. Leslie County is the defending 14th Region champion. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Leslie County girls’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.
