Fatal wreck on KY Rt. 30

MIDDLE FORK - An Ohio man died in a wreck involving two motorcycles and a pickup truck on KY Rt. 30 Saturday.

At approximately 2 p.m., rescue crews were dispatched to a wreck on KY. Rt. 30, near Lakefront Church of God (the former Middle Fork Elementary School), according to Magoffin County Rescue Squad Captain Carter Conley.

Four motorcycles, driven by men from Zanesville, Ohio, were traveling north on Rt. 30. A local man, Steven Rice, was driving a pickup truck, traveling south, when the truck and one of the motorcycles hit head-on.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene, suffering massive trauma in the wreck.

Another motorcycle also was involved in the wreck, with the driver sustaining a possible fracture to his left foot and possible closed-head injury, Conley said. He was airlifted to Pikeville Medical Center.

Kentucky State Police shut down the road for four hours as they reconstructed the accident, though that information has not been released at press time.

Though they had helmets with them, Conley said none of the motorcycle drivers were wearing protective headgear at the time of the wreck.

In addition to the Magoffin County Rescue Squad and Kentucky State Police, the Middle Fork Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene. The Independent will release more information as it becomes available.
