Dunn raises money for St. Jude
A Magoffin County businessman and auctioneer held an event in May, raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Local realtor and auctioneer Luther Dean Dunn held a charity auction on May 19 at the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center, raising $2,570 for the children’s hospital.
Jacqueline Harris, with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, sent Dunn a letter recently, congratulating him on his event’s success, explaining that it costs $2 million per day to operate the hospital, an amount that is primarily funded by people like Dunn.
As Harris explained in her letter, “There is no place like St. Jude. World-class researchers and doctors work seamlessly to save the lives of children through cutting-edge research, innovative treatment and compassionate family-centered patient care. We treat patients from all 50 states and around the world and we do it for free – no family ever pays St. Jude for anything. Ever. The research conducted at St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate for childhood cancers from 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today. None of this would be possible without the support of volunteers like you.”
Dunn explained that he did previous fundraising auctions for the hospital 23 years ago, raising around $6,000.
As for why he decided to hold the recent event, Dunn said, “I wanted to help other kids and I’m capable of doing this. I just felt the need to do it. I think more auctioneers should do it.”
For the May 19 event, Dunn said he auctioned items, as well as collected donations from local people, whom he wants to thank. He also acknowledged Hershell Wright and the True Gospel Echos for performing at the Community Center that day.
Dunn explained some of the good the hospital does, saying, “The little children go there and the parents don’t have to pay anything. They help the parents with lodging and food, even. It’s one of the finest places there is.”
While Dunn said he is not an official contact person for the hospital, he said that if anyone in the community is needing to get in touch with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to call him and he can help make the connection. His phone number is 606-349-2318 and cell phone number is 606-422-9803.
“I just hope never any of my family members have to use their services, but it’s amazing everything they do,” Dunn said.
