Low Attendance Leads Officials to Close Schools

 
In the midst of slumping attendance, Magoffin County school officials decided to close schools for Thursday.
Average daily attendance, which determines funding for Kentucky school systems, had fallen from 92 percent Monday to 82 percent Wednesday, leading officials to announce the school closure Wednesday afternoon.
“I don’t want to make it sound like it is all about money, but all of our funding is based on average daily attendance and it has gotten to the point where it was just not financially feasible to have school,” Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Joe Hunley said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Fresh Start Program Offering Help With Overdure Child Support

 
A program currently being conducted by Magoffin County Attorney Greg Allen and his child support staff offers new opportunities for local citizens to satisfy old child support debts.
Through the Fresh Start Program, those owing child support payments to the Cabinet for Health and Family could see a reduction in their balance, according to Sheila Huff, a child support specialist with the county attorney’s office.

Unemployment rates rose in all 120 Kentucky counties between August 2008 and August 2009 with Magoffin County leading the way, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Criminal Complaint Filed Against Representative Ancil Smith

 
A Kentucky legislator has been given an October 6 court date to answer a criminal complaint filed by his neighbor following a dispute between the two regarding a fence project.
Ancil Smith, (D) Leburn, who serves as representative for the 92nd district of Magoffin, Knott, and Letcher counties, is scheduled to appear in Knott district court next Tuesday to respond to a complaint filed September 24 by David Wesley Hayes.

Seven Die on Kentucky Roadways

 
 
Preliminary statistics* indicate that seven people died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, September 21 through Sunday, September 27, 2009.  Six of the crashes involved motor vehicles and 5 of those victims were not wearing seat belts.  Single-fatality crashes occurred in Daviess, Green, Kenton, Madison, Marshall and Washington counties.  The crash in Daviess county involved the suspected use of alcohol.
