Education Commissioner Visits Hardest-Hit Schools

He talked with school officials about attendance, technology and the elementary classroom needs and offered the Department of Education's assistance in whatever problems arise due to the storm.

Commissioner Holliday surveyed the damages to Salyersville Grade School, Herald Whitaker Middle School and the Magoffin County High School for the first time in person, while his staff have been in and out for the past month.

AR Tests Return to SGS

Kites, Kites Everywhere!

Mrs. Paula Howes kindergarten class at South Magoffin Elementary have been studying weather. After they completed the unit the class created kites. On a sunny spring day the students tired them out. Looks like they had an awsome time testing them. The students seem very happy with their results, so I'm guessing that all the kites flew.

HWMS Student Competes at State

Kelsey Cole, an 8th grader on the Herald Whitaker Middle School Academic team recently competed at the state level at the 2012 Governor's Cup held in Lexington, Ky.  Kelsey, who had placed first in Language Arts and 3rd in Written Composition at the regional level represented our school and county on March 10-12th.  She scored the 14th score in the state in Language Arts, narrowly missing the top ten by only three points.  She scored higher than 90+ other students.  Congratulation, Kelsey to a job well done.

Hornets Excel at Pikeville All-Comers Meet || Boys Finish Fourth, Girls Seventh

The boy’s team finished fourth overall, while the girls were seventh. Other schools participating included: Pikeville, Letcher County Central, Paintsville, Prestonsburg, Shelby Valley, Betsy Layne, Belfry, Jenkins, Pike County Central, Rose Hill, Perry County Central, Jackson and East Ridge. 

Dean Thacker finished first in the triple jump, while Steven Helton was fifth.

In the long jump, Thacker was sixth. Others placing were: Helton (10th place), Jeremy Bauer (18th place) and Cody Gasparac (23rd place).

SECOND RUNNER UP

Magoffin County High School cheerleaders placed second runner up in the in-game competition at the Girls Sweet Sixteen State Tournament, held last month.
