John Clay Mullins, age 53 of Royalton, KY., passed away August 30, 2010 at his residence.   He was born April 3, 1957 in Magoffin County, the son of the late Cecil Mullins and Sarah Vanderpool Mullins.  He was married to Teresa Ann Stigall Mullins who survives.  Also surviving is one son:  John Edward Mullins of Salyersville.  Five brothers:  Wilson Mullins of Royalton, KY., Rudy Mullins, Donald Mullins, Jackie Mullins all of Salyersville, KY and Harold Mullins of Tazwell, TN.

Donald Ray Sparks age 60 of West Liberty, KY., formerly of Salyersville, passed away August 31, 2010 at the Salyersville Health Care Center.  He was born November 16, 1949, the Son of Eula Sparks Hackworth who survives.  Also surviving are his wife, Kathy Prater Sparks, two daughters:  Tiffanie April Sparks (Richard) Robinson of Salyersville and Kasey Dawn Sparks (Josh) Hampton of West Liberty, KY, three Brothers:  Larry Garver Hackworth, Timothy J Hackworth and Darrel Keith Hackworth all of Salyersville, KY, two Sisters:  Jo Ann Howes of Salyersville, KY., and Ruth

Joy passed away peacefully on August 18, 2010 at Arbor Hospice.  She was born on March 27, 1934 in Salyersville, KY, the daughter of Beecher and Maude Patrick.  On July 2, 1951 Joy married the love of her life, Ray Gullett.  The couple moved to the Ann Arbor area in 1957.  Joy’s greatest treasure was her family.  She dedicated her life to her children and later, grandchildren and even great grandchildren.  For her, there was no better way to spend the day than surrounded by family and friends.  She never missed a chance to celebrate life’s achi

Amos Auxier, age 92, of Royalton, Ky., passed away Friday August 27, 2010 at his residence.  Amos was born August 29, 1917 to the late James Franklin and Eliza Howard Auxier in Carter County, Ky.  Amos worked in the oil fields and was a logger.  He was united in marriage to the late Francis Bailey Auxier and was a member of the Rock Fork Baptist Church.  Amos is survived by two Sons:  Kenneth Auxier and Arthur Auxier both of Royalton, Ky; Two Daughters:  Cloteen Aldrich of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Estelene Kennedy of Albion, Michigan; Five Brothers:  Hub

Raiders no match for the Hornets

Last Friday night, our very own Magoffin County Hornets defeated the South Floyd Raiders by a margin of 20 points. The 46-26 win was not only a major confidence boost, but a big relief, as well.

HWMS Hornets look to open regular season gril wth a victory

In the HWMS Hornets’ opening scrimmage of the season the Leslie County Eagles defeated the Hornets with an 8-0 victory. The Hornets host the Eagles this Thursday and look to even the score.
