Tommy Jean Lemaster Cooper, age 77 of Bedford, Ky., formerly of Salyersville passed away on Friday August 13, 2010 at her home.  She was born April 20, 1933 to the late Orville Lemaster and Essie Adams Lemaster.  Tommy was a homemaker and worked with her husband the late Dr. John Cooper as a medical receptionist.  Survivors include one son Mark (Vicki) Cooper of Nicholasville, Ky., 2 grandchildren and one half-sister, Kay Dillabough.  A graveside service was conducted on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Bluegrass Cemetery in Salyersville.

NME classes tour Pioneer Village

Mrs. Jessica Howard, and Mrs. Melinda Owen’s 3rd & 4th Grade classes at North Magoffin Elementary are preparing for the upcoming Founders’ Day and Sesquintential Celebration by touring and obtaining knowledge at the Pioneer Village Complex.

Students focus on forensics

Students, Ayngelea Griffith and Chris Ousley, from Magoffin County attended Forensic Camp at the East KY Science Center the week of June 14, 2010/ Ayngelea and Chris explored the field of forensics as they participated in activities related to bullet trajectory, fingerprinting, blood typing, ink chromatography, etc.

North Magoffin Gym gets facelift

North Magoffin Elementary has recently updated the gymnasium floor.  The Panther mascot was added to each side of the floor. The center court consist of a basketball design with a large P in the center with the word Panthers on each side of it. The new additions have greatly enhanced the gym floor. The Magoffin County Hornets scrimmage previous regional championship contenders

Last Friday the Magoffin County Hornets traveled to Letcher County to go nose-to-nose with the Bulldogs in their first scrimmage of the season.

Herald Whitaker Hornets fall short in season opener to Leslie County Eagles

The Leslie County Eagles, having the home field advantage, handed the HWMS Hornets their first loss of the season by a score of 8-0.

Grade school practice underway!

The grade school football program showed some big numbers with their opening practice Tuesday, August 17. 

Prater wins YPEK award

Magoffin County’s own, Dennis Prater, won the Young Professionals of East Kentucky Civic Leader of the Year Award, Saturday, August 14 at the Ramada Inn Conference Center, in Paintsville.

Community Day this Saturday

Friday, August 13 Joy Mining Machinery presented the Magoffin County Community Foundation a check for $10,000, representing their partnership with the Salyersville National Bank in co-hosting the 7th Annual Magoffin County Community Day, scheduled for this Saturday, August 21 at Ramey Memorial Park.
