Along with a huge early lead, Magoffin County also lost its opportunity to play in the 15th Region Tournament.
Leading by double figures through most of the first half, the Lady Hornets saw Lawrence County rally in the third quarter, force an overtime period, and eventually eliminate Magoffin County 62-58.
Eighth grader Jamie Castle led the Lady Hornets offensively while senior Amber Minix also reached double figure scoring in the semi-finals of the 57th District tournament.
Castle hit for seven of her team high 14 points in the first quarter when Magoffin County surged out to an 11-point advantage heading into the second period.
When Madison Reed, who finished with seven points, hit a pair of free throws late in the first half, the Lady Hornets still led by 11.
But Lawrence County ended the second quarter with a 5-1 run and went into intermission trailing 28-21.
The Lady Dawgs, who would eventually lose to Sheldon Clark in the tournament’s championship game, continued to rally behind senior Morgan Cox and freshman Taylor Porter.
Lawrence County, topped by Cox and her 16 points, enjoyed a 16-7 third quarter run and led by two heading into the final frame.
Porter, who had hit for 10 points in the second period, finished the game with a total of 15 points.
The Lady Dawgs, 15-10, advanced to the 15th Region tournament at Pikeville’s East Kentucky Expo Center where they defeated East Ridge in a first round game Monday evening.
Magoffin County finished its season with a 10-15 record.
Morgan Connelley added nine points to the Lady Hornet effort last Wednesday and Morgan Arnett scored seven points.
Lindsey Howard and Nichole Fletcher rounded out Lady Hornet scoring with three and two points respectively.
