Robert Conley began his early morning trip Monday with intentions of assistance, but his plan involved lending a helping hand instead of receiving one.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., Conley headed out in response to a single vehicle accident report that included possible injuries.
Conley, a member of the Magoffin County Rescue Squad and the son of squad captain Carter Conley, approached the accident site and reportedly lost control of his vehicle on the same patch of ice that caused the initial accident, which happened on Route 40 near the Magoffin-Johnson County line and involved two Lawrence County men.
Conley’s vehicle slid over an embankment and overturned before coming to a stop near the other wrecked vehicle.
The Lawrence County men had escaped major injuries and assisted Conley as he exited his vehicle.
Moments after Conley’s accident, Rodney Ward, of Magoffin County, hit the icy patch of roadway and his vehicle slid off the roadway before crashing passenger-side first into a tree.
Conley and the unidentified Lawrence County men proceeded to assist Ward, who was not seriously injured, from his vehicle.
Conley suffered strained/pulled muscles in his shoulder and various cuts and bruises. He was treated by a local doctor and released.
Two other accidents occurred Monday morning after freezing drizzle lightly coated bridges and some roadways in and around Magoffin County.
Both accidents, which happened at approximately 7 a.m., were on the Mountain Parkway west of Salyersville.
No serious injuries were reported in either accident, both of which were of the single-vehicle variety.
