While Magoffin County was struggling to find consistent offense, Lawrence County was heating up from distance, and the combined result didn’t prove favorable for the homestanding Lady Hornets.

The one-time owner of a six-point lead, Magoffin County saw the Lady Dawgs score 10 straight points, six of which came on three pointers, late in the first and early in the second quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Lawrence County added three baskets from beyond the arch in the third period, went on up by double figures, and eventually claimed a 62-46 57th District victory Monday night at John Sam Bailey Memorial Gymnasium.

In just over a minute, Amber Minix scored five of her 14 points and a short jumper at the 1:39 mark of the opening period put the Lady Hornets up 11-4.
But with the help of Lena Ison, Lawrence County reeled off 10 unanswered points and owned a 15-11 lead when Ison buried one of her team’s seven three pointers with 5:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Ison, who tossed in a total of 10, scored the first five points of the second period before turning the offensive chores over to Tasha Williamson early in the second half.
Williamson, all on three pointers, scored nine of her 12 points in the third when the Lady Dawgs turned a five-point halftime advantage into a lead of as many as 12.

Madison Reed kept Magoffin County within single digit striking distance when the sharp shooting eighth grader drilled consecutive three pointers in the final 64 seconds of the third period.

Reed scored 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets, who trailed 46-37 heading into the final frame.
Magoffin County, which also got eight points from Jamie Castle, stayed withing striking distance, trailing by just eight with just under five minutes remaining.
But Lawrence County, led by 12 points each from Williamson, Shantelle Horn, and Morgan Cox, went on an 11-3 run to seal the final deal.
Lindsey Howard scored three points and Morgan Arnett and Linzi Watson hit for two apiece for Magoffin County, which again struggled from the free throw line.
The Lady Hornets, also getting one point from Morgan Connelley, hit on just nine of 24 foul shots.
Lawrence County, 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the district, went 11 of 21 from the free throw line and hit on seven three pointers while Magoffin County had just three baskets from beyond the arch.
The Lady Hornets, who beat the Lady Dawgs 66-58 in Louisa back on December 14, lost for the first time in three outings and fell to 7-12 overall.
Magoffin County, 2-3 in district play, will remain at John Sam Bailey Memorial Gymnasium to host district rival Johnson Central Saturday before traveling Monday to Paintsville for another district matchup with the Lady Tigers.
