Reigning Miss Magoffin County Sarah Markland will be center stage once again when the battle for Miss Kentucky 2009 begins next Thursday.
Markland, the 21-year-old daughter of Randy and Jackie Markland, of Salyersville, will be one of 32 contestants vying for the title, as well as an opportunity to compete in next year’s Miss America Pageant.
The 2009 Miss Kentucky Pageant will be held at the Singletary Center for the Arts located on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington.
Preliminary competitions are scheduled to begin Thursday, July 16, and will continue the following night before Saturday’s final night of competition and the crowning of the new Miss Kentucky.
Markland, currently pursuing a Nursing degree from Big Sandy Community and Technical College, will use a platform issue of Animal Cruelty Awareness and Prevention.
Her talent presentation will be a self-written monologue entitled "Applachian Woman." Markland is being sponsored by the Miss Magoffin County Scholarship Organization.

The Miss Kentucky Pageant will award over $36,000 in cash scholarships as well as numerous prizes and in-kind scholarships to various colleges and universities.
The new Miss Kentucky will advance to the Miss America Pageant , which will be held in January, 2010 at Las Vegas’s Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
