Joy passed away peacefully on August 18, 2010 at Arbor Hospice. She was born on March 27, 1934 in Salyersville, KY, the daughter of Beecher and Maude Patrick. On July 2, 1951 Joy married the love of her life, Ray Gullett. The couple moved to the Ann Arbor area in 1957. Joy’s greatest treasure was her family. She dedicated her life to her children and later, grandchildren and even great grandchildren. For her, there was no better way to spend the day than surrounded by family and friends. She never missed a chance to celebrate life’s achievements, both large and small. Children would delight in the special “treats” he made for their birthdays, each had a favorite, and Joy was always eager to honor their requests. A mom to everyone she came in contact with, she was quick to offer a meal, a heartfelt hug, or an ear for listening. Always the center of attention, she loved telling and re-telling stories of her childhood growing up in Southeastern Kentucky as the eighth of ten children. Never one to take life too seriously, she had an outrageous sense of humor, and was not one to be censured no matter what the company. Thanks to Mamaw, laughter was the soundtrack for Gullett family gatherings. The consummate caretaker, Joy was employed by Whitehall Convalescent Home in Ypsilanti for many years. She took great pride in her work, and showed up everyday with a smile on her face, a sparkling personality and quick wit. When Joy was on the floor, there was no doubt her patients were being looked after by the very best. Her kind spirit will be long remembered. Joy is survived by her husband, Ray Gullett; her children, Phillip “Duke” (Mary) Gullett, Rhonda (Kevin) O’Connor, Michelle (Steve) Pennington, Shawn (Dirk) Naylor; grandchildren, Stacie, Stephanie, Thorne, Mackenzie, Alec, Graham, Davis, Troy and Cole; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Dyllan, Desymn, Myah and Brooklynn; her sister, Janet Sue; and her brother, Haskell. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Maggie, Mildred, Nannie, Chester, Maxie, Lester, Charles; great-grandson, Bronson; and beloved Chihuahua, Tiny. Joy’s family will receive friends at Nile Family Funeral Home, Liberty Road. Chapel, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI on Friday, August 20,2010 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 21,2010 at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
