5 vie for Miss Magoffin

The Miss Magoffin County Scholarship Pageant will be held Friday, Sept. 3, at 8:00 p.m. at the Pioneer Village in Salyersville. Pageant Director Jincy Bailey is very excited to have five beautiful and talented contestants to compete for the crown of Miss Magoffin County 2010-2011. The contestants will compete in four competitions: judge’s interview, physical fitness in swimsuit, talent, and evening wear.

The theme for this year’s pageant is “Ladies' Night” - Celebrating Magoffin County's Sesquicentennial” and will feature a birthday party atmosphere. Plenty of local entertainment will be on hand including an intermission show from Nashville, TN band “Madulous Soup” who has its roots in Salyersville. The reigning Miss Magoffin County Dakota Howard will also perform before relinquishing her crown to another lucky young lady. The featured dancers will be the Magoffin County High School Dance Team under the direction of Andrea Whitaker Allen.

The emcee for the evening will be WYMT weatherman and Salyersville native Jim Caldwell.

The young women vying for the title of Miss Magoffin County 2010-2011 are:

Contestant No. 1 – Lara Jordan Turner
Lara is the 19 year old daughter of John Paul Turner and Angela Turner of West Liberty, Ky. A sophomore at Morehead State University, she is majoring in Radiology. For her talent, she will play “The Well-Tempered Clavier” on the piano composed by Beethoven.

Contestant No. 2 – Mollie Beth Salyer
Mollie is the 18 year old daughter of David and Cheryl Salyer of Salyersville. A sophomore at Big Sandy Community & Technical College, she is majoring in Education. For her talent, she will perform a jazz dance to “When Doves Cry” by Prince.

Contestant No. 3 – Jerica Lynn Blair
Jerica is the 17 year old daughter of Jerry and Belinda Blair of Marin, Ky. After graduating from highschool, she plans to attend Morehead State University and major in Pre-Dentistry. For her talent, she will sing the popular ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is” by Mariah Carey.

Contestant No. 4 – Kayla Reanne Reed
Kayla is the 20 year old daughter of Steve and Sharon Reed of Salyersville. A Junior at Morehead State University, she is majoring in Biology/Pre-PA. For her talent, she will perform a jazz dance to a remix of Michael Jackson hits.

Contestant No. 5 - Whittney Dawn Allen
Whittney is the 18 year old daughter of Rod and Vivian Morgan of Salyersville, Kentucky. She is a freshman at UK, majoring in Integrated Stategic Communications. For her talent, she will sing “Let Me Try,” by Hope Partlow.

The new Miss Magoffin County will win a $1,000.00 scholarship, crown, trophy, prizes and will advance to the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Pageant in Lexington, Kentucky. Other awards includeTalent Award, Swimsuit Award, Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic, People's Choice Award, and the Jennie Lou Caldwell Memorial “Sunshine Award”.
