Last Friday night, our very own hometown Hornets opened up their regular season grid with a 20-12 victory over the Trimble County Raiders.
This was a first time match-up between the two teams and needless to say it was no disappointment.
The Hornet offense was the first to put together a successful drive with a hard-nosed 22 yard run by senior running back Colby Howard. This score can also be credited to the Hornet offensive line which, for the most part had a well rounded performance Friday night. Howard led the team in scoring for the night and ended Friday night’s matchup with two rushing touchdowns.
The Hornets also had success through the air when senior quarterback Dylan Keeton was able to hook up with sophomore Austin Whitaker for a critical 12 yard fourth down touchdown reception.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Hornets only allowed the Raiders two touchdowns which were a result of defensive miscues.
“We’re happy to have started the season out on the right foot. It was a good team win,” Coach McCoy said, “but we also seen some areas that need improvement for our upcoming game against South Floyd.”
This season the South Floyd Raiders acquired a new weapon to add to their arsenal: a quarterback that can fling the ball deep and scramble out of the pocket for big gains.
“The Raiders in the past were always big and strong. Now that they have added some speed and depth to their game from the QB position it’s going to be a different pill to swallow.” McCoy said.
You can bet the Hornets will be well prepared for when the South Floyd Raiders roll into town Friday Night, so don’t miss out on the action and come support your hometown Hornets. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 August 27.
