Last Thursday, the HWMS Hornets were in action at home against the Estill County Patriots in their second scrimmage of the season.
The Hornets could not stop the run game of the Patriots which led to their 20-0 victory. Unable to match their opponent’s ability to move the ball the Hornets could not put together a successful drive.
The Hornets were also plagued with a lack of experienced players, forcing other players to play outside their normal duties.
“Although this was a tough loss,” Coach Campbell said, “we learned a lot. This game allowed us to see where we are and where we need to be.”
High School Head Coach Chester McCoy was in attendance. “Although it was a loss the team played with great heart and physicality. They will be a great asset to the High School Program,” McCoy said.
The HWMS Coaching staff remains optimistic for the remainder of the season and wants to remind any middle school student who wants to come out and play that it’s not too late. The Hornets don’t have enough players for live action during practice which harms the ability to react to game-time situations.
“We are trying to build a tradition here in Magoffin County so as a player progresses throughout school the fundamentals of the game won’t be new to them,” Coach Campbell said.
The HWMS Hornets will be in action again next Thursday, September 2nd at home against the Leslie Co. Eagles. The HWMS Hornets urge everyone to come show their support.
