Last Friday the Magoffin County Hornets traveled to Letcher County to go nose-to-nose with the Bulldogs in their first scrimmage of the season.
The Bulldogs were previous Regional runner-ups and state runner-ups in a Virginia tournament, but the Hornets did not allow these claims to overshadow their performance Friday night.
Overall, the Hornets’ coaching staff seemed well pleased with the results of the scrimmage.
From the offensive perspective, “We moved the ball well,” Coach Smith said.“We also saw some bright spots and some areas for improvement.”
Many players stood out in their offensive performance Friday night. Dylan Keeton, Justin Poe, Colby Howard, and Caleb Hall are just to name a few. The biggest area of improvement for the Hornets is the offensive/defensive lines.
Last season the Hornets’ front line was recognized for their statistics in sacks allowed per game and sacks per game. This leaves the Hornets with some “big shoes to fill.”
From the defensive side of the ball the Hornets looked strong. They showed some physicality and never gave up.
“We had a few let downs,” McCoy said, “but nothing that cannot be fixed.”
Matt Patton, Jacob Johnson, Tyler Davis, Caleb Hall, and Austin Whitaker played well from a defensive standpoint.
The Hornets are looking forward to their season getting underway this Friday, August 20th against Trimble County.
The Hornet Football Program would like to welcome everyone out and support your hometown Hornets.
