Dealing with the weather
Special to the Independent

With temperatures flirting with 100 degrees and heat indexes running over 100, the Magoffin County High School and the Herald Whitaker Middle School football teams work to stay hydrated.

Middle School Coach Mark Campbell said they make sure all the boys drink plenty of water, even if they say they are fine to avoid what happened in Rowan County last week, with five players treated for dehydration.

High School Coach Chester McCoy said they adjust their practices by the State’s rules, as well as by feeling. If it feels too hot, they take the equipment off.

When the heat index hit 105 degrees the football team is not allowed to practice outside, but Coach McCoy said he likes to err on the side of caution, cutting off outside activity at heat indexes of 100 degrees.

“We preach nutrition and hydration and tell the boys, ‘You can’t help the team if you’re sick,’ so we try to keep them healthy and safe as possible,” Coach McCoy said.
