Trial starts Monday

PIKEVILLE - Howard Harlow Back, 75 of Salyersville, is set to face a jury trial starting Monday, May 21 at 1 p.m. in the Pikeville U.S. District Court.

Students to Students || Students from Rowan donate to MCHS

RCSHS Principal Debbie Howes said their goal was to collect one dollar to represent every person in their building, but with the help of the students, they were able to surpass that goal, for a total of $600.

"We knew at the end of the day, people would have that afterthought, that, 'Oh, they're going to need this,'" Howes said. "So we waited until now for just that. This is from students to students and we understand how you feel and we are thinking of you all."

Superintendent search begins

SALYERSVILLE - The process for accepting applications for the Magoffin County Schools superintendent position is officially closed, as of last Friday, and the Screening Committee began the paper screening process on Monday.

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

Whereas, the month of May is recognized nationally as Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month; and,
Whereas, Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited and chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States; and,
Whereas, nearly 1,000 new cases of Cystic Fibrosis are diagnosed in the United States each year; and,
Whereas, several Magoffin County citizens are bravely and successfully battling Cystic Fibrosis; and,

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met briefly on Tuesday morning, with the main item on the agenda concerning economic development and possible road projects.

Sheriff’s audit comes back iffy

FRANKFORT, Ky. – State Auditor Adam Edelen today released the audit of the sheriff’s settlement - 2010 taxes for Magoffin County Sheriff Carson Montgomery. State law requires the auditor to annually audit the accounts of each county sheriff. In compliance with this law, the auditor issues two sheriff’s reports each year: one reporting on the audit of the sheriff’s tax account and the other reporting on the audit of the fee account used to operate the office.

Mercer County Family Resource Center donated school supplies, cards and a check for $820 to the Salyersville Grade School Family Resource Center.  Pictured is Mrs. Leigh Ann Arnett's second grade class who wrote "thank you" notes for the donation.

Children Incorporated donates money for tornado victims

Mr. Ron Carter of Children Incorporated recently visited Magoffin County to present checks for the tornado victims.  Mr. Carter presented the North Magoffin Elementary Family Resource Center with a check for $500.00 to help those students who were recently affected by the tornado. Children, Incorporated relies mostly on monthly donations from individual sponsors. It has been pairing dedicated sponsors with children in need since 1964

Creative Recess

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Patsy Howard and Mrs. Tracy Hoskin's classroom at Salyersville Grade School are playing hopscotch at their temporary school.  With no playground, teachers must be a little creative at playtime.  However, the students are having a great time!!

NME STLP Receives State Honors

The STLP Video group at North Magoffin Elementary were honored during the State STLP competition in March, in Lexington, Kentucky. The talented group of boys created and produced a PSA (Public Service Announcement)  titled, "Don't Do Drugs", which received 2nd runner up during the State STLP competition. Magoffin County cancelled their trip to the State Competition due to the tornado disaster. So the boys were really surprised to find out through an email that their PSA had still been judged at the state level.

Flag Etiquette

School Counselor, Tommi Lemaster has been teaching 5th and 6th grade students at the "new" Salyersville Grade School about proper American Flag etiquette. The students have learned how to raise the flag, secure it on the pole, lower the flag and correctly fold it. Last Days of School

Ms. Tracey Hoskins and Mrs. Patsy Howard’s kindergarten class come together after the tornado and enjoy the last days of kindergarten class at Salyersville Grade School.

Bowling and Schianca headed to state tourney || Tennis duo to open play today against Russell squad

SALYERSVILLE – Lexi Bowling and Margerita Schianca have qualified for the state tennis tournament.

The Magoffin County duo were ousted by Morgan County last week in the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament, but still earned a spot in the state event, which begins today at Shillto Park in Lexington. They will play Russell’s Maci Ferguson and Kierstin Hensley at 11:45 a.m.

Lady Hornets Extend Win Streak to nine || Magoffin Notches Big District Win Over Paintsville, Plays to a Tie Against Pikeville

Magoffin County got a solo homerun in the fourth inning by Jazzy Howard to lead the Lady Hornets to a thrilling 7-5 win over district-foe Paintsville last Thursday.

Howard also had a single and scored twice for Magoffin County (23-6), which won its ninth straight game.  Darci Arnett and Chelsey Cole each plated two runs on a single.
Marissa Joseph followed with an RBI-single. Leslee Howard had a single and scored twice. Julieann Helton scored two runs, and Madison Reed finished with a run.
