USDA Extends Conservation Stewardship Program Sign-Up to January 27

WASHINGTON – USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief Dave White today announced that the cut-off date for the current Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) ranking period has been extended to January 27, 2012. Producers who maintain a high level of conservation on their land and agree to adopt higher levels of stewardship are eligible for CSP payments.

This man, unidentified, was sentenced to hold a sign admitting his guilt in front of the store he reportedly stole from. His sign reads: “I was caught stealing/shoplifting from Frazier’s Prater Drug/Radio Shack and plead guilty in Magoffin County District Court.”

Former magistrate dies, 91 -- Remembering Ramey Montgomery || Eulogy

Ramey Montgomery, age 91, of Lakeville Road, Salyersville, Kentucky, passed away Saturday morning, January 21, 2012 at the Salyersville Health Care Center. Born September 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Reese and Nell Collins Montgomery. He is survived by his wife Inez Stepp Montgomery; three sons: Manuel and his wife Peggy; Billy Jack; and John and his wife, Vanessa.

Independent wins award

The staff of the Salyersville Independent brought home first place from the Kentucky Press Association Convention, held last week in Lexington.

The article “Absentee voting percentages throw up red flags,” by Heather (Webb) Oney from the December 9, 2010 issue of the Independent, won first as best enterprise or analytical story in the Weekly Class 3 category.

Judges noted, “Literally a 'first class' treatment of an important subject. Information and stats flow with the story's current."

Redristricting means new senator for Magoffin

FRANKFORT – Hello. My name is Brandon Smith and I am your new state senator. It is our Constitutional duty every ten years to realign our voting districts according to population after each census. This act fulfills the requirement of one man, one vote.  Because of population shifts, the 20th State Senatorial District now includes Magoffin County in addition to Bell, Breathitt, Leslie, Johnson, and Perry counties. (The final congressional district lines are still being discussed between the chambers.) I look forward to sharing updates from Frankfort discussing the important issues being debated and voted on.

Carpenter Recognized at MCHS

HONORED: Former Salyersville High School star Leonard Carpenter, left, presents Magoffin County High School Principal Tony Skaggs with a plaque he received last year after being inducted into the Dawahare’s KHSAA Hall of Fame. Carpenter was the first player in state history to score 3,000 points in a career. He finished with 3,048.
